ideas in 8 chapters

Chapter 1

Get booked while you sleep

Most guests decide in the evening, on their phone. Make it easy to say yes at that moment.

Try this week

  • Search for your school on Google and check the link goes straight to booking.
  • Book a lesson at your own school on your phone and count the taps.
  • Add your booking link to your WhatsApp away message.
  1. 1.1

    One link everywhere

Put the same booking link in your Instagram bio, your Google profile, your WhatsApp away message and on a QR code at the beach hut. Every place a guest finds you should end in a booking, not a question.

  2. 1.2

Show the price and the next free spot

Guests who have to ask what it costs or when there's room often book somewhere else. Put prices, times and free spots on the page itself.

  3. 1.3

Don't make guests create an account

Every extra field is a reason to stop. A name, an email and a payment are enough to book.

  4. 1.4

    Take payment when they book

A paid booking is a booking that shows up. Paying up front also saves you the money talk on the beach.

Chapter 2

Earn more from every guest

The easiest guest to win is the one who is already booking. Small extras add up over a season.

Try this week

  • List three extras guests already ask for and offer them at checkout.
  • Price a five-lesson package below five single lessons.
  • Pick one quiet weekday and plan a new format for it.
  1. 2.1

    Offer extras at checkout

Wetsuit hire, a photo package, lunch or transport: offer them while the guest is booking, not afterwards at the counter.

    In Waveplan

  2. 2.2

    Rent out gear between lessons

Boards and wetsuits on the rack earn nothing. Rentals fill the quiet hours and suit guests who can already ride.

  3. 2.3

    Sell packages, not single lessons

A five-lesson package turns a one-time visitor into a regular and gets you paid up front. Let guests plan their own sessions.

    In Waveplan

  4. 2.4

Create formats for the quiet months

Kids' camps, sunset sessions, team days or theory evenings online: new formats reach new guests and keep your crew busy outside the peak.

Chapter 3

Weatherproof your season

Conditions change; your guests' trust shouldn't. A clear routine turns a bad forecast into a non-event.

Try this week

  • Write down your weather call time and put it in your confirmation email.
  • Set a maximum group size for every level.
  • Agree which days guests can move to when a lesson is called off.
  1. 3.1

Make the weather call at a fixed time

Decide at the same moment every time, for example the evening before, and tell guests when they'll hear from you. Guests can live with a change, not with not knowing.

  2. 3.2

    Move, don't refund

Offer a new time before you offer money back. Most guests would rather surf another day than not at all.

  3. 3.3

    Fix your group sizes

Decide how many students one instructor takes per level and stick to it. Safer lessons and better reviews follow.

  4. 3.4

    Keep one calendar

Lessons, rentals and instructors in one place means nobody plans from an old photo of the whiteboard.

Chapter 4

Build a crew that comes back

Good instructors are your product. Make their season easy and they'll return next year.

Try this week

  • Ask your instructors for next month's availability by the 20th.
  • Write down which instructors teach which levels.
  • End each day with a five-minute debrief.
  1. 4.1

Plan from availability, not from the group chat

Ask instructors for their availability every month and plan from that, instead of from whoever answers the group chat first.

  2. 4.2

    Match instructors to lessons

Know who teaches what, and where. The right instructor on the right lesson makes sessions safer and guests happier.

  3. 4.3

    Give everyone their own day

Instructors want to know where to be, when and with whom. Put it on their phone, not in a message thread.

    In Waveplan

  4. 4.4

Give each role the right access

Not everyone needs to see payments or change prices. Clear roles prevent mistakes and keep sensitive data where it belongs.

Chapter 5

Turn guests into regulars

A guest who comes back costs nothing to find. Make the first lesson the start, not the end.

Try this week

  • Add a 'what to bring' paragraph to your confirmation email.
  • Ask every group for a review at the end of their last lesson.
  • Offer the next level at the end of every course.
  1. 5.1

Let the confirmation email do the work

What to bring, where to park, where to meet: answer the questions before guests ask them. Write it once, in your own style.

  2. 5.2

Ask for a review at the high point

Ask right after a great session, while the feeling is still there. Reviews are the first thing new guests read.

  3. 5.3

    Remember who your guests are

Keep their level, board size, weight and height. A guest who is recognized feels welcome and gets the right gear straight away.

  4. 5.4

Let guests manage their own bookings

Guests who can see their bookings and plan their next session themselves don't need to message you, and find it easier to come back.

Chapter 6

Market like a local

Most guests find you through search, social media and the place they're staying. Be easy to find in all three.

Try this week

  • Check your Google profile: link, opening hours and photos.
  • Ask three places nearby to share your booking link with their guests.
  • Reply to every review this week.
  1. 6.1

    Look after your Google profile

Fresh photos, the right opening hours, your booking link and a reply to every review. It's often the first page a guest sees.

  2. 6.2

    Post the conditions

A short daily post about today's conditions keeps you in people's feeds and gives them a reason to book tomorrow.

    In Waveplan

  3. 6.3

Team up with where guests stay

Hotels, campsites and hostels are asked about lessons every day. Give them your link and make it easy to send guests your way.

  4. 6.4

    Make it look like you

Your own domain, colors and logo build trust before the first lesson.

  5. 6.5

    Measure what works

Know which posts and ads bring in bookings, so you spend on what works.

Chapter 7

Put AI to work

AI won't run your school, but it can take repetitive writing and translating off your plate.

Try this week

  • Translate your main activity into the languages your guests speak.
  • Ask an AI tool for your ten most asked questions.
  • Switch on one automation for something you now do by hand.
  1. 7.1

    Speak your guests' language

Let AI translate your pages and activities, then review the texts that matter most. Guests book more easily in their own language.

  2. 7.2

Draft with AI, finish in your own voice

Use AI for a first draft of activity descriptions, emails and FAQs, then add the details only you know.

  3. 7.3

    Turn your inbox into answers

Paste a month of guest questions into an AI tool and ask for the ten most common ones. Answer them on your page and in your emails.

  4. 7.4

    Automate the routine

Instructor planning, payment reminders and availability requests can run by themselves. Spend the time you save on the water.

Chapter 8

Know your numbers

A full beach doesn't always mean a healthy school. A few numbers show where the money goes.

Try this week

  • Work out what one group lesson costs you.
  • Count last month's no-shows.
  • Check your plan against your bookings in the pricing calculator.
  1. 8.1

Know what a lesson costs you

Add up instructor time, gear, insurance and location costs per lesson. Set your prices from there, not from the school next door.

  2. 8.2

    Choose the right price model

Per person, a base price plus extra people, or one price per group: pick what fits each activity instead of one rule for everything.

  3. 8.3

    Track no-shows and late cancellations

Count how many spots go empty. If it's a lot, payment at booking and clear booking rules pay for themselves.

  4. 8.4

Check what you pay per booking

Once a season, compare booking fees and monthly prices against your volume. The cheapest plan changes as you grow.
